| Sandblasted signs are created just the way it sounds. The basic sign is covered with a heavy rubber mask which has lettering and/or the design cut out. After choosing what parts will be raised and what will be blasted the mask is removed & the wood is sandblasted away, showing the grain of the wood. Standard lettering can be designed by a computer, however artwork is usually something I hand design & cut. Staining the wood brings out the grain, adding painted or gold leafed lettering or accents just adds to the richness of the overall sign. Because this type of sign is rot & insect resistant I refurbish these types of signs as needed, as well as repair them after vandalism and other types of damage. The Brook's Knolls sign is actually a urethane sign, (Signfoam), approximately 2" thick, obviously being synthetic gives it the advantage of not resulting from the death of trees & it also doesn't rot. Like the wood signs above it can be refurbished in the event of vandalism, as long as the damage is not so severe that it destroys the sign's basic integrity. |
| These days routed signs are usually produced on a table with a computer driven router. The signs above are all made of cedar. All of them have 23 K gold leaf lettering & accents. Like the sandblasted signs that I make, routed wood signs are 2" thick & the overall look is rich & classic. Because cedar is insect & rot resistant these signs have an extremely long life. Even if the sun damages them over a period of time, they can periodically be refurbished for less than replacement cost. |
